How Much Does It Cost for a Family to Live in Bali?

Really How much does it cost for a family to live in Bali? Living in Bali as a family of 6 has been an incredible experience for us. Not only do we get to enjoy the beautiful beaches and vibrant culture, but we also appreciate the affordable cost of living compared to many other places. If you're considering a move to Bali, you might be wondering about the expenses involved. Let's break it down for you.

Accommodation to Live in Bali

Finding a spacious and comfortable home for our family was a top priority. We opted for a three-bedroom villa with a private pool, just off the beach which costs around $3,000 per month. Keep in mind that rental prices can vary depending on the location and amenities.

Bali offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly apartments to luxurious villas. It's essential to choose one that suits your family's needs and budget. Some families may choose to live in a more affordable apartment or house, while others may prefer the added luxury of a villa.

Plus you also have Accommodation associated fees, things like electricity, pool maintenance, if you choose to have cleaning staff, rubbish collection, banjar fees (like a local council fee).

Food and Groceries to Live in Bali

One of the great things about Bali is the abundance of fresh and affordable food options. We enjoy cooking meals at home, and our monthly grocery bill for a family of six is approximately $500.

Bali is known for its vibrant markets and local produce, which allows us to eat healthily without breaking the bank. Additionally, coffees and eating out occasionally at local restaurants costs us around $300 per month depending on how fancy we go!

Exploring the local cuisine is an essential part of our Bali experience, and we love trying different dishes from traditional warungs to trendy cafes. Of course, the amount spent on food can vary depending on individual preferences and dietary choices.

Transportation

Getting around Bali is relatively inexpensive especially with apps like Grab and GoJek. We are considering hiring a motorbike or two for quick trips around our area as the petrol and hire fee is reasonably priced.

Motorbike rentals, add up to around $100 per month depending on the type and style of bike prices can vary.

These options are convenient and cost-effective for shorter distances or when you don't want to deal with parking and traffic. Some families may choose to rely solely on ride-hailing services and motorbike rentals to save on the initial cost of purchasing a car.

Education Whilst Living in Bali

As a family with children, education is a crucial aspect. Bali offers a range of international schools with varying fees. We have personally chosen to homeschool our kids inline with the Australian curriculum as opposed to enrolling them in a local or international school.

The education system in Bali provides a diverse learning environment, combining both local and international curriculum. It's important to consider the quality of education and extracurricular activities offered by different schools when making a decision.

Some families may choose to enroll their children in local schools or homeschool them, which can significantly reduce education expenses.

Healthcare in Bali

Access to quality healthcare is essential for any family. Fortunately, Bali has excellent medical facilities, and health insurance is affordable. We paid around $300 per month for comprehensive travel insurance coverage for the entire family of six.

This ensures that we have access to reliable healthcare services and peace of mind in case of any medical emergencies.

It's crucial to research and choose a reputable insurance provider that offers coverage for your specific needs. Some families may choose to opt for more basic health insurance coverage or rely on the public healthcare system to reduce healthcare expenses.

Utilities - How Much Does It Cost for a Family to Live in Bali?

Utilities such as electricity, water, and internet are reasonably priced in Bali. We spend around $200 per month on these services.

Bali's infrastructure is well-developed, ensuring reliable and uninterrupted utility services. The cost may vary depending on your usage and the type of accommodation you choose.

It's advisable to factor in these expenses when budgeting for your monthly living costs. Some families may choose to minimize electricity and water usage or opt for cheaper internet plans to save on utility expenses.

Entertainment and Activities

Living in Bali means having access to a wide range of recreational activities. We enjoy exploring the island's natural beauty, visiting temples, and engaging in water sports. We specifically chose our home to be metres away from the beach to have acess to free swimming and beach play all year round.

Bali offers a plethora of options for entertainment and activities for both adults and children. We budget around $200 per month for entertainment, including visits to attractions, outdoor adventures, and cultural experiences.

However, it's worth noting that the cost of entertainment can vary depending on your preferences and the frequency of your outings. Some families may choose to prioritize free or low-cost activities to reduce entertainment expenses. We recently visited the movies as a family for $30AUD for 6 tickets! Watch the video here.

Total Monthly Expenses

Taking all of these factors into account, our total monthly expenses as a family of six living in Bali amount to approximately $4000-4500. Keep in mind that these figures are based on our personal experiences and preferences. They are probably a little high whilst we navigate the space between "we are not here on holidays" and "this is life now!".

Your expenses may vary depending on your lifestyle choices, family size, and individual circumstances. It's important to create a detailed budget that considers all aspects of your family's needs and priorities. Some families may choose to spend more or less in certain areas, depending on their financial situation and priorities.

Overall, Bali offers a wonderful quality of life at an affordable cost, making it an attractive destination for families seeking a unique and enriching experience. The island's natural beauty, rich culture, and warm hospitality create a vibrant and welcoming environment for families to thrive.

It's essential to plan and budget carefully to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable life in this tropical paradise. By considering your family's specific needs, making informed choices, and being mindful of your spending, you can create a fulfilling and affordable life for your family in Bali.
